Things I Amplify from the web

Is Apple losing control? Literally?

It's hard to believe that Apple has approved the Opera browser for the iPhone. Apple has always maintained a very rigid policy of not approving applications that duplicate functionality that is already built into the iPhone.

I mean, this is good news... and, I'll be one of the first to download the Opera browser onto my iPhone.

But, is Apple giving up a little?

Nah, I seriously doubt it. There's more to this and it will surface down the road.

Unbelievably, Opera Mini for iPhone Approved by Apple

Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges.

Woman who accidentally fell pregnant again decides to broadcast abortion ordeal.

Regardless of which side of the abortion issue you happen to be on, what is your take on using social media to give a play-by-play to the world?

I can empathize with her wanting to help other women and share her ordeal. But, I have trouble understanding how this woman "accidentally fell pregnant again"...

Are some issues just too personal to be fitting for social media?

Or, are there no boundaries?

What's your feeling?

Angie Jackson

A mother of a four-year-old son with special needs who accidentally fell pregnant again has decided to broadcast her abortion ordeal.

'I had made a decision when my son was born to try to not get pregnant again, and if that failed I'd planned that I would get an abortion if I needed one,' she said.

On her YouTube video, Jackson added: 'I’m doing this so other women know, ‘Hey, it’s not nearly as terrifying as I had myself worked up thinking it was.’ It’s just not that bad.'

The hip retailer that misses the social opportunity…

Wouldn't you think that a retailer that targets a young demographic such as A&F would be setting the trends in social media marketing instead of trying to use it as a way to dig themselves out of a giant hole?

CVS mixing drugs with social media. A match made in heaven?

If CVS is using Twitter solely as a coupon feed, then I agree that they don't get the real potential of Twitter.

I mean, how do you respond to a coupon?

How can a coupon engage customers in back and forth dialog for CVS?

Social media sites are driving retail marketers crazy. They clearly know that powerful things are happening on these sites, but they’re clueless about how to get involved. CVS on Wednesday (Feb. 10) launched a series of programs on Twitter, indicating that the chain simultaneously gets Twitter and doesn’t get it. An E-mail blast from a PR firm representing CVS promised anyone following CVS on Twitter “special discounts, coupons, money-saving tips and ‘inside scoop’ updates” as well as “a secret discount code for 25 percent off nearly everything on CVS.com.”

How is Buzz playing with Twitter and Facebook? Well that depends…

At this point, it seems that Google Buzz is playing a little better with Twitter than it is with Facebook.

Tweets and Buzzes seem to get along... but, Facebook updates and Buzzes are giving each other the "cold shoulder" according to @mashable.

Have you Buzzed? Will you be Buzzing?

Is it worth the effort to maintain another, separate social profile?

Facebook vs Twitter with B2C marketing… in the end the customer wins!

Obviously, Facebook offers marketers more "real estate" to create and craft eye appealing promotions like the one shown below.

But, in my experience, Facebook users are more fickle than Twitter users... and gaining fans proves more difficult than getting followers. Facebook users in general do not want their wall filled with pitches and ads from too many businesses.

How many businesses are you a fan of on Facebook?

Have you un-faned a business because they post too many updates?

Victoria Secret-Facebook

As more retailers look to develop effective social-media strategies, a new study finds that Facebook is by far the most effective way to woo would-be shoppers.

ForeSee, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., says that of the 69% of online shoppers who are social media users, 56% have chosen to "friend," "follow" or "subscribe to" at least one store. But they are selective, he says, and 61% of this group is connected to fewer than five companies. Another 21% is made up of more serious shoppers who follow between 6 and 10 stores, while just 18% is hardcore enough to have friended more than 10.

Yet 25% of the top 100 online retailers have no formal presence on Facebook, Ertell says, and another 25% have fewer than 10,000 fans.Read more at www.mediapost.com

Are you Buzzing, Waving or Tweeting???

I agree here for sure.

After waiting anxiously for my Google Wave invite (which I received a few months ago), I thought it was something to make social media easier... not more complicated.

Although I'm not really sure what the deal is with Google Buzz yet ( I was only able to get it to work on my iPhone and it hasn't appeared in my Gmail account) if it requires you to maintain yet another... separate social media profile... then I probably won't be so anxious to jump on board.

How about you? Are you looking for another social media existence in your life?

Google Buzz slammed by Yahoo and Microsoft

"Two years after #Yahoo! launched #Buzz, Google follows suit. Check out the original: http://buzz.yahoo.com/"

"Busy people don't want another social network, what they want is the convenience of aggregation," Microsoft said in a statement. "We've done that. Hotmail customers have benefited from Microsoft working with Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and 75 other partners since 2008."

Googles Twitter killer?

What do you think?

If your not a Gmail user, it's kind of irrelevant.

But, as Google entwines more and more kick ass FREE applications into your daily life, it's only a matter of time before you'll convert to a Gmail user.

I was always adamant about NOT using Gmail. Thought it was for people that couldn't get their own domain email.

I now have 4 different Gmail accounts!!

What about you? Got Gmail? What do you think about the Twitter killer feature?

Google Creating Twitter Clone for Gmail

Written by Jolie O'Dell / February 8, 2010 11:49 AM / 8 Comments
As soon as this week, Google might be rolling out a "Twitter-killer" feature for Gmail users, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

Google's new tools, however, will better integrate with Google's multimedia sites, YouTube and Picasa. (Currently, Google Talk users can share YouTube videos via chat, which prompts a miniaturized version of the video to pop up above the chat in progress.) Users will also be able to see "a stream of status updates from people they choose to connect with."

Tools make the job easier, but don’t make it the right job.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big proponent of using the best tool to make the job easier and the result better.

This article though seems to imply that the reason businesses are or aren't making money with social media marketing is related to the tools their using to send their Tweets.

If you not sending the right message to the right listeners at the right time the tools are irrelevant.

The primary reason many businesses are not seeing the expected return on their social media efforts is more directly tied to their followers and the content of their Tweets.

What's your experience?

Do you know how to find your customers on Twitter?

Do you know what to say to engage your customers?

Looking to build an iPhone app? Here’s a KILLER directory…

Doing some research on location based media for an article I'm writing and cam across this directory of iPhone app developers.

Brilliant stuff.

I'm amped [pardon the pun] about the potential this technology holds in store for marketers.

Will send an update when my article is finished.

But, if you're thinking about having an app made (and you should) bookmark this directory so you'll have it handy when your ready...
