It's hard to believe that Apple has approved the Opera browser for the iPhone. Apple has always maintained a very rigid policy of not approving applications that duplicate functionality that is already built into the iPhone.
I mean, this is good news... and, I'll be one of the first to download the Opera browser onto my iPhone.
But, is Apple giving up a little?
Nah, I seriously doubt it. There's more to this and it will surface down the road. Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges. Read more at gizmodo.com |
Wouldn't you think that a retailer that targets a young demographic such as A&F would be setting the trends in social media marketing instead of trying to use it as a way to dig themselves out of a giant hole? “We have some exciting social media and marketing initiatives in the pipeline that I believe will help our business. We are actively seeking new ways to effectively engage our customers through these medium. Having recently launched on Facebook, Abercrombie & Fitch has already 775,000 fans, Hollister over 340,000. Obviously, Facebook offers marketers more "real estate" to create and craft eye appealing promotions like the one shown below.
But, in my experience, Facebook users are more fickle than Twitter users... and gaining fans proves more difficult than getting followers. Facebook users in general do not want their wall filled with pitches and ads from too many businesses.
How many businesses are you a fan of on Facebook?
Have you un-faned a business because they post too many updates?
As more retailers look to develop effective social-media strategies, a new study finds that Facebook is by far the most effective way to woo would-be shoppers. |
ForeSee, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., says that of the 69% of online shoppers who are social media users, 56% have chosen to "friend,"
"follow" or "subscribe to" at least one store. But they are selective, he says, and 61% of this group is connected to fewer than five companies. Another 21% is made up of more serious shoppers who follow between 6 and 10 stores, while just 18% is hardcore enough to have friended more than 10. |
| Yet 25% of the top 100 online retailers have no formal presence on Facebook, Ertell says, and another 25% have fewer than 10,000 fans.Read more at www.mediapost.com |
I agree here for sure.
After waiting anxiously for my Google Wave invite (which I received a few months ago), I thought it was something to make social media easier... not more complicated.
Although I'm not really sure what the deal is with Google Buzz yet ( I was only able to get it to work on my iPhone and it hasn't appeared in my Gmail account) if it requires you to maintain yet another... separate social media profile... then I probably won't be so anxious to jump on board.
How about you? Are you looking for another social media existence in your life? Google Buzz slammed by Yahoo and Microsoft |
"Two years after #Yahoo! launched #Buzz, Google follows suit. Check out the original: http://buzz.yahoo.com/" |
"Busy people don't want another social network, what they want is the convenience of aggregation," Microsoft said in a statement. "We've done that. Hotmail customers have benefited from Microsoft working with Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and 75 other partners since 2008." Read more at money.cnn.com |
Doing some research on location based media for an article I'm writing and cam across this directory of iPhone app developers.
Brilliant stuff.
I'm amped [pardon the pun] about the potential this technology holds in store for marketers.
Will send an update when my article is finished.
